Project PRIN2022 Prot. 2022RYNKB5: The cellular function of SERINC proteins and their role in retroviral infection
Research Unit PI: Nicoletta Guaragnella
Department of Biosciences, Biotechnology and Environment-University of Bari “Aldo Moro”
Brief description of the project:
The SERINC family of genes encodes conserved multipass transmembrane proteins in all eukaryotes. In particular, SERINC5 is an inhibitor of retrovirus entry into target cells. Research on SERINC5 has until now mainly focused on understanding the mechanism of inhibition of retrovirus infection.
However, the protein clearly stands out from the crowd of other known retroviral inhibitors pointing to a fundamental role in cell biology and a yet elusive function in retrovirus infection. This research programme will aim to characterize the cellular and molecular functions of TMS1, encoding the human homologue of SERINC5, in Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells, with its role in stress response and its interaction with signalling pathways and proteins.
Desired skills and experience:
Basic experience in the lab, with a focus on Cellular and Molecular Biology techniques. Previous experience in genetics, cellular and molecular biology of yeast is desirable but not mandatory. Fluency in English (written and oral).
Additional skills:
Good in time and priority management Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team Ability to work in an organized and productive manner Transparency
